Beyond Conservation

Conservation in Thailand is often focus on increasing the numbers of a few selected species. Along the way, conservationists are frequently labeled as obstacles to development. Yet at its core, conservation is really about sustainability and how we share resources over time.

Conservation does not begin with prohibition or stop using natural resources, it begins with observation and asking questions.

In fieldwork, whether watching insects in a grassy plot, walking along the coast, or talking with farmers. The same pattern appears again and again, all life is connected within a system. Without understanding that larger picture, we may be trying to solve problems at the surface, without ever seeing where they truly begin.

We often ask how many individuals of a species should remain, but we rarely ask what they eat, where they live, or whether their home is still intact. When certain insects disappear from an area, it is not because they are weak, but because their food plants or surrounding environment have changed, often without us noticing.

The ocean follows the same logic. Whales, turtles, dugongs, and large fish do not survive on their own. They depend on food chains that begin with small forms of life and their ecosystems such as seagrass meadows and coral reefs. When these systems are healthy, the question of animal numbers may no longer be the most important.

In the end, conservation is everything, not only about cute species or beautiful tourist destinations. It is about livelihoods, economies, and fair access to resources for everyone.

…Perhaps the beginning of conservation is simply pausing a little longer to look at the small things around us, understanding how nature works as a system, and learning how to live together in balance.

At Wanghin Lab, we focus on developing ways to communicate science and nature through field-based activities and workshops. Helping young people and general public better understand the natural world. You can support our work by following our page, sharing our stories, or joining one of our workshops!
